Keep cut avocados green
One of the best ways to keep a cut avocado green is to simply place it in a airtight container with a piece of cut up onion. Cover the avo with a lid and refrigerate it. It will stay fresh for several days this way. The sulfur compounds that make you cry when you cut onions are released and this acts as a preservative, keeping the cut avo fresher for longer.
It works for guacamole too!
You can also adapt this technique to keep guacamole from turning brown. Scattering chopped onion over the top of the guacamole, then covering the bowl works really well. Just stir in the onion before serving!
To quickly ripen avocado, use a banana
Ripe bananas release a lot of ethylene. This is the hormone that triggers ripening in mature fruit. Place one in a closed paper bag with your under-ripe avocados which will speed up the ripening process. This process will take around 24 hours. Your avos will then be perfectly soft and ready to eat.
How do you know when an avo is perfectly ripe?
Take a peek under the dry little button on the stem end, if it’s green, then you will have a perfect avocado. If it’s brown, then you will find a brown slimy mess inside.
